Discover the Revival of Achimenes

Achinemes make a great houseplant and greenhouse plant. Often called the Hot Water Plant, even though they don't actually require hot water, Achimenes were first mentioned in A History of Jamaica in 1756 and became exceptionally popular during the Victorian period, with lots of new introductions by commercial growers across Europe. They saw a resurgence in popularity during the mid-20th century, only to fade in popularity once more. We have an exciting selection of varieties and now it's time to bring back these beloved plants.

Achimenes are part of the same family as Streptocarpus and the shape of the flower in some varieties is very similar.

Unlike Streptocarpus, Achimenes are winter dormant and die back to rhizomes (see photo below taken of the rhizomes in the greenhouse).

These can be stored in a dry dark place at about 10°C (50°F) until ready to plant. They can be planted in late winter/early spring in a warm room (minimum temperature of 15°C (60°F).  Three-quarter fill a 12cm pot with a fibre-based houseplant potting compost; place 3-5 rhizomes flat on the surface of the compost and cover with another 2cm of compost, then gently firm down.  Water the compost lightly and keep the pot a bright position, but not in full mid-day sunshine.

A helpful hint is to place these pots on a heat mat or inside a heated propagator – this provides them with a good start during the cooler months.

Most varieties will start flowering after about 3 months of good growth and will continue blooming for the rest of the summer. When in full growth, never allow the pots to dry out completely.

×Achimenantha and Kohleria are related to Achimenes and have similar growth habits and care needs. ×Achimenantha results from a cross between Achimenes and Smithiantha.

We send rhizomes out from Feburary.
